Identifying the research priorities for new large scale Murray-Darling Basin environmental watering project

Identifying the research priorities for new large scale Murray-Darling Basin environmental watering project

The Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre is coordinating a new large scale environmental water knowledge generating project. The Murray-Darling Basin Environmental Water Knowledge and Research (MDB EWKR) Project is commencing a planning phase to identify research priorities and establish a work plan for the next five years that will meet project objectives.  MDFRC is working with the Department of the Environment, MDBA, environmental water managers and research institutions and scientists to identify the priority knowledge needs, establish collaborative arrangements to undertake the research, and develop the work plan.

Research priority identification has been designed as an inclusive process, to enable environmental water managers and researchers alike to contribute their expertise and ideas.  Separate, but coordinated processes are underway to engage the environmental water managers and researchers in this process, reflecting their respective roles and contributions to this process.  The MDFRC will then consolidate the outcomes of these processes and put recommendations to the Department of the Environment and MDBA regarding the research priorities for MDB EWKR.

As part of this process we are inviting researchers to submit suggested research questions, within the framework of Basin Plan objectives and environmental outcomes established under the Commonwealth Environmental Water Office’s Long Term Intervention Monitoring Program.  We are asking that this process be coordinated within research institutions or agencies, so that we receive one consolidated response from each institution or agency.  We are in the process of identifying coordinators within each institution or agency to facilitate the process, and we’ll provide them with further guidance to undertake the process.  If you wish to be involved and you’re not sure who your coordinator is, or if you think your institution or agency has been overlooked, then please contact Ian Burns at i.burns@latrobe.edu.au. We anticipate commencing the process in early September with submissions to be provided within a period of about three weeks. We will be using the MDB EWKR collaboration space(register at http://ewkr.mdfrc.org.au/) to disseminate information about the process.
